2016DC Karen and CB on the Skiff

As 2016 recipients for Distinguished Citizens of the Year!

Karen Perdue was raised in Fairbanks, attending local elementary schools and graduating from Lathrop High School. She briefly left Alaska to attend and graduate from Stanford University. Karen spent her early years working in the family business, Perdue’s Jewelry, with her parents, Ralph and Dorothy Perdue. By her mid-teens, she determined that retail was not her strength, so she hired on with the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner as a cub reporter and also made money for college working as a Teamster on the Trans-Alaska pipeline. In the late 1970’s, she went to Washington, DC to work as a press secretary for Senator Ted Stevens, which launched her career in public service. She spent 25 years working in State Government in Juneau, including 7 years as the State’s Commissioner of Health and Social Services.

CB Bettisworth, while born in Seattle, comes from a long line of Fairbanks families (Hering, Strandberg). He attended Fairbanks elementary schools and graduated from Lathrop High School. In 1967, CB completed his Professional Degree in Architecture at the University of Oregon, and worked as a laborer for his father, Bob Bettisworth. Upon graduation, he worked for Philleo Architectural and Engineering and for Grey Rogers Meyers and Morgan – now known as Design Alaska. In 1972, CB engaged in a Master of Planning Degree program at the University of Washington, which led to a 3-year stint as a Borough Planner in Ketchikan. In 1976, he formed what is today Bettisworth North Architects and Planners, and remained as its sole owner until 2007, when he sold the enterprise to three employees.

The banquet will be held on December 7, 2016 at the Westmark Gold Room at 6:00 p.m.
