Beaver Day is an important time each year at Lost Lake Scout Camp to help prepare  for the summer and make sure everything is in great shape.  This can’t be done without lots of hands. Older Scouts, Scouters, and Parents are invited to participate in Beaver Day events. Scouters with skills in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, or other trades are especially encouraged to attend.

Beaver Day participants will need to bring and turn in a copy of their BSA Health and Medical Record Parts A & B when they check in. Forms will be returned at the end of the event. Forms that are not picked up will be destroyed.

Date for upcoming Beaver Day:
When: Saturday, May 18, 2024
Work will begin at 9:00 a.m.

8:30 AM – Breakfast
9:00 AM- Duties assigned and work begins.
Noon to 1 PM – Lunch
1 PM – 5 PM – Work projects
5:30 PM – Dinner

 

This is a one day event but participants are welcome to camp or stay in a cabin free of charge Friday or Saturday night, or both. Campsites and cabins are on a first come first served basis, so sign up early to reserve your accommodations.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:  

Effective July 12, 2021 all merit badge counselors who are not officially approved by their council to counsel a badge will have that badge removed from their approved list of badges to counsel in Scoutbook. If a merit badge counselor is connected to a Scout to counsel an affected badge that connection will be removed. The only changes to Scouts would be to drop the merit badge counselor connection for the affected badges. Scoutbook will not remove any MB progress approved by the affected merit badge counselors.

Merit Badge Counselors can check if the badge they are counseling in Scoutbook is approved by their council by going to My Dashboard, Administration, My Account, My Positions: their positions and if the badge has a blue checkmark it is approved; if the badge has a green checkmark it is not approved and you should contact your council to continue counseling that badge. New in Online Registration: The ability for parents and/or volunteers to transfer between councils using the online registration system is live now. Click HERE to view/download a user guide for how it works. This allows one to login and transfer from one council to another, and once the application is approved and the overnight sync is run all the training and advancement records for the member will follow.

 

Now possible to contain different Member ID numbers in My.Scouting. Your ID number from other councils and your ID number from the Midnight Sun Council can now all be listed on your account.

 

New Background Check Forms came out in 2019!

The 2019 Background Check Forms must be used. Please make sure new applicants use the new form, as registrations cannot be processed without them.

Youth Protection is a serious part of scouting and our council requires all adults to renew their certification each year. Registrations cannot be processed without a current certificate.

Merit Badge Counselors – Please turn in a new adult application with a 2019 updated background check form and current YPT certificate as we are updating our records. Please include a new merit badge application so we can record the merit badges you want to be a counselor for.

Be Sure to Update BeAScout Pins to Reflect Status
Updating unit pins with early-adopter status on BeAScout is an important step in helping prospective Scouts and their families get in touch with units in your council.
Early-adopter councils: BeAScout is open for units to indicate boy-only (default), family pack, or girl-only (no date; open for business now) status.
Non early-adopter councils: BeAScout is open for units to indicate boy-only (default), family pack, or girl-only AND the date that they will begin accepting female applications.
 
                       1. Log in to your My.Scouting account select Menu at the top left
                       2. From the drop-down menu, select your unit
                       3. Select Organization Manager
                       4. Select the Settings tab
                       5. Scroll to Family Scouting
                       6. If remaining boy-only, do nothing (this is the default setting); otherwise, select girls only or boys and girls
                       7. Click Commit
 
Please note: Online registration is now open for EA councils to accommodate fall recruiting.

The Essentials of Merit Badge Counseling

This PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes covers the required procedures for merit badge counseling, clarifies the role of counselors in the BSA advancement program, and discusses the appropriate approaches to use in working with Scouts. It is intended as an instructor-led presentation to counselors of any experience level and takes 60 to 90 minutes to complete.

Merit Badge Days

A merit badge event lets Scouts learn about sports, crafts, science, trades, business, and future careers.

An event may focus on a single merit badge or a variety of fields that might not normally be available. Observatories, planetariums, parks, museums, ships, colleges, universities, as well as police and fire departments may offer special events available only to Scouts and only one day each year. Scouts might learn first-hand from dentists, veterinarians, doctors, lawyers, financial planners, engineers, chemists, artists, astronomers, scientists, firemen, policemen, and other experts.

Merit badge events may also offer training in Scout Skills through First Class with a schedule similar to an Advancement Campout. Adult training, and youth leader training are often offered as well.
Often certain requirements must be completed outside of the merit badge event either as preparation or with a merit badge counselor at a later date. A merit badge event may focus on a single merit badge or offer a variety of topics such as

Note: This is a One-Day Merit Badge program for active ScoutsPre-Registration is required and space is limited!

 

Sign up at the Scout Office BEFORE May 6th, 2023!

 

– Scouts must be in uniform

– Bring breakfast of $10 for breakfast

Flying Permission Slip is required.

 

Permission form to fly must be brought to the Midnight Sun Council  office prior to May 5, 2023 ( download below).

Weight of Scout (for flight planning purposes) must be submitted to Midnight Sun Council  office by May 5, 2023.

Scout must bring Aviation Worksheet (download below) and Scout Must read Aviation Merit Badge Pamphlet prior to attendance.

Wood Badge

Due to the lack of registrations, the 2018 Wood Badge Course is being postponed until 2019.

We are planning to have a Wood Badge kick off/promotion scheduled later this year, in order to give everyone the opportunity to meet some of the staff and to ask questions about this fantastic opportunity.

We need at least 30 people to register to hold the  course.

This years Tired Iron event went extremely well. The new location at the Fairbanks Lions Snowmobile Fun Club house served perfectly. Thank you to Alaska Vintage Sled Club, Tired Iron, and the Lions for putting on the event. Big thanks to Wilderness Search and Rescue and our Camp Ranger for the medical coverage of the races, and special thanks go to the Scouters that came out to set up! Without the volunteers and organizations coming together it surely would not have gone so smoothly. Looking forward to doing this again next year!

Let’s talk trash about

2024 CLEAN UP DAY!

When:  May 11th, 2024 

Thank you for your interest in Golden Heart Clean Up Day! At this point if you register below, the information will be used to collect volunteer participation numbers only. Our volunteers that pick up the full trash bags from the roadside (our awesome Heavy Haulers) have been assigned their route and will only be picking up bags from previously registered areas and main roads and intersections. You can still participate! Grab some bags and join the fun. If there are people cleaning an area that you wanted, ask to join in and make new friends. If you clean in an area that is not along a main road please take your full bags to the FNSB landfill and tell them it’s clean up day trash (please secure you load) or get them to a main road or intersection by Saturday afternoon. See below for more information and thank you for your part in making our community a better place.

What is Clean Up Day?

Clean Up Day is a community wide volunteer initiative to clean up the trash uncovered by melting snow in the Fairbanks North Star Borough before tourist season begins.

Who organizes Clean Up Day?
The Clean Up Day Committee is made up from volunteers from many different sponsoring organizations including; United Way of the Tanana Valley; Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, Adopt a Highway; Green Star of Interior Alaska; Midnight Sun Council, Boy Scouts of America; Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce; Fairbanks North Star Borough, Central Recycling Facility; The Radio Station; Cowles Heating Services; University of Alaska, Advocacy Committee, Alaska Comedy, North Pole Community Chamber of Commerce; and Golden Heart Waste Management

Recycling is Back for 2024

We are excited to offer Green Bags as an option again this year! Green Bags will be passed out at all 5 bag pickup locations. You may fill the bags with #1 and #2 plastic bottles and jugs and aluminum cans. You may leave the green bags along main roads with other Clean Up Day trash and the Heavy Haulers will get it where it needs to go. After Clean Up Day you may take your Green Bags to the Central Recycling Facility, 1855 Marika Road. Where to get Clean Up Day bags?

Midnight Sun Council, BSA  –  1400 Gillam Way, Monday – Friday 9 AM to 5 PM

Who picks up the trash bags from the roadside on Clean Up Day?
The volunteers, who pick up the trash bags from the roads on Clean Up Day and transport them to the landfill, call themselves the “Heavy Haulers.” The crew and the pickup route are organized by Justin at Cowles Heating. Many companies volunteer their time and their trucks to pick up trash bags. Thank you to all our Heavy Haulers; Alaska Waste, Horst Expediting,  Shredway, Golden Heart Waste Management, 907 Diesel, Hydro Tech, Total Toyo, and Cowles Heating.

What if a group picks up an area on a different day than Clean Up Day?
If you organize a clean up crew on a different day than Clean Up Day, you will need to take the yellow bags to the FNSB landfill and let the attendant know you’re there for Clean Up Day. Please secure the Clean Up Day bags in your vehicle! You don’t want your group’s hard work to end up back on our roadways. The Clean Up Day Committee does apply for a tipping fee waiver from the Borough for about a month around Clean Up Day. The bags are weighed, and the landfill keeps track of the tonnage so we can track the community effort. If it is taken to a local transfer station, it is treated as regular household trash and will not be tallied.
